Monochromatic Flowers for The Friday Mashup!

Good Friday morning!

This week at The Friday Mashup Cindy has a challenge for us that will start us thinking about Spring again (oh, happy day!).

I used the flowers from Best of Flowers and coloured them with Blender Pens. I used Crisp Cantaloupe, Strawberry Slush and Raspberry Ripple to colour the image, with a little bit of Old Olive for the leaves.

The top layer was done with a sheet of Vellum. I cut out the framelit from the centre, and before I removed the framelit die, I sponged all around the vellum piece with Crisp Canteloupe. It's such a soft look.

I finished the card off with a little banner and a Vintage Faceted button tied with a bit of Baker's Twine and there I was done!

Check out the challenge this week:

  1. Create a project that's "Monochromatic"
  2. Create a project with "Flowers"
  3. or Mash it Up and Create a "Monochromatic project with flowers"

Colour Me...! Playful!

It's hard to believe that February is almost over! Over at Colour Me...! we are on a 4-colour week, and already saying goodbye to our oh-so-wonderful Featured Designer for the month, Susie. My how time flies.

This week we had some fun colours; Bermuda Bay, Basic Black, Real Red and Smoky Slate.

I started with a 4-1/4" x 4-1/4" cardbase. I used the hardwood background stamp on another piece of Smoky Slate and cut out one of the frames from the Chalk Talk framelit set. In behind I tucked the fun stamp from Love You to the Moon. I distressed the edges slightly using the distressing tool and sponged around it a little bit with black.

Let me tell you, I loved these colours... As I was making this one, I was thinking about 100 other cards I wanted to make with this combo. I digress...

The banners were punched out with the Banner Punch from SAB and each one was decorated differently. From Left to Right:
  • Bermuda Bay candy dots
  • Essentials Wooden Elements (coloured with Real Red marker)
  • Hand doodles with Bermuda Bay marker
  • Vintage Faceted button
  • Itty Bitty Shapes punch
Check out the challenge colours this week:
We would love to see what you come up with this week.

Thanks for stopping by!

Bucket List for MDS Monday

This week at MDS Monday, Cindy has a great sketch for us - using a state/province as one of your elements.

We haven't travelled a lot yet, so I thought we would start a travel wishbook. What better place to start than in your own country? We now have the beginning of our "Canadian Bucket List" book.

It may seem odd to start with Nunavut, but I thought it might be fun to work backwards from the 'newest' province/territory to the oldest. ;) To be quite honest with you, that just came to me now... I just really want to go to Nunavut, and I'm trying to sell my husband on the idea. He asked me if we could start with someplace warmer.

Here is the front cover, the Nunavut page, and the journaling page (as a two page layout):

The last two pages would be on the left and right pages of the book:

I used the kit Providence of Provinces for most of this page. The cover page is done using a template from the kit as a starting point, and then changing/adding/evolving as I decided what I ultimately wanted to do. Check out the kit!

Good Luck for Freshly Made Sketches

I wanted to make a good luck card for someone really special who is going to be doing a series of interviews on Monday/Tuesday. I knew that I wouldn't be able to mail the card and have it get there in time, so I decided to make something digitally.

I used the new Sweet Sorbet DSP from Sale-a-Bration as well as a few other pieces of this digital kit.

The sketch was from Freshly Made Sketches this week, and I absolutely love it!

Shape Up for The Friday Mashup!

Good Friday morning,

This week at The Friday Mashup Lynda has a really cool challenge for us; we are to use hexagons and triangles!

I wanted to do something a little funky this week... something a little different.

I started with 4 colours of hexagons; Pink Pirouette, Strawberry Slush, Real Red and Rich Razzleberry. Then I cut each of those hexagons into 6 triangles and rebuilt them on a rectangular panel.

The card itself is a bit bigger than standard to accommodate 4 hexagons going across. This one measures 6" x 4-1/2, with the panel sticking over the edge it's 5" wide. Good thing we have the Envelope Punch Board now isn't it? ;) I was able to make a super cute envelope to fit and match.

To add a little bit of interest, I let the last two hexagons break apart and 'float' away. I had a lot of fun making this card.

Here's the challenge for this week:

  1. Create a project with "Hexagons"
  2. Create a project with "Triangles"
  3. Mash it Up and Create a project using "Hexagons & Triangles"

Be sure to pop on over to The Friday Mashup and see all the creative ways the Design Team has used hexagons and triangles this week.

Colour Me... Subtle!

Good morning! This week at Colour Me...! we are working with 3 soft colours for our subtle week; Baked Brown Sugar, Soft Sky & Pistachio Pudding.

Lately I've been avoiding the 'coloured' cardbase and background. I don't think it was intentional, but when this card was done, it had occurred to me that it was the case!

It had been way too long since I had used the awesome Paper Doilies that I knew I just had to whip one out... That, and I came across a rogue doily when cleaning up my scraps. Call it fate :)

The background is embossed with the Honeycomb Embossing Folder and raised on the cardbase with Dimensionals. I then cut out a bunch of flowers with the Floral Fusion Sizzlit. I sponged all those bad boys lightly around the edges with Soft Sky and popped a little Soft Sky Candy Dot in there in the centre. The leaves were cut out of Pistachio Pudding using the Little Leaves Sizzlit (one of my favourites!)

Check out the challenge this week:

We would love to see you playing along with us this week. Come check out what the rest of the fabulous Design Team has create and then link up your project!

Mailbox happiness!

I finally sat down and made something I've been thinking about for a long time - a little mailbox of happiness for our family! We're suffering from Winter's-almost-over-but-Spring-is-still-too-far-away blues these days, and we needed to start celebrating the small things that make us smile.

With the new Sale-a-Bration stamp set, I couldn't resist! The "You make me happy when skies are gray" stamp from See Ya Later was just perfect!

My oldest son absolutely loved The Bee Movie and there's a part in the movie where Barry B. Benson says that bees can't fly in the rain - Hunter always used to get so upset for the bees... He was devastated that they couldn't go out in the rain. So for awhile, when it was sunny, he used to say "the bees can come out today!". I thought incorporating the bees into the mailbox was a fun idea. Worked perfectly for the Dynamic Duos challenge this week as well :)

Each family member has a different coloured envelope, and when the little 'you've got mail' flag is up (it's hinged on a brad), then you can check the box and see who the warm-fuzzy is for.

It's a very basic design, starting with a 6" x 3-1/2" base and curving a 6" x 12" piece of cardstock overtop. The sides were reinforced on the inside using Coaster Board to help it stand straight and and not bow. The front of the mailbox was trimmed using the Oval Framelits die and the inside was lined with a piece of Daffodil Delight Polka Dot Parade DSP.

The bees were made with the small oval punch. Their tail was done with the bottom of the small heart punch and the head was made with the small circle from the itty bitty punch pack. Their wings are punched from vellum with the small heart punch.

The mailbox is fastened with an Antique Brad and a hair elastic.

I hope to make a tutorial and have that posted within the coming weeks, so please check back!

I played along with the Dynamic Duos challenge this week; Basic Black and Daffodil Delight with the added challenge of a shaped card. I didn't do a shaped card, but thought a 3D project would be cool too :)

Hunter's Heroes

Good morning and welcome to a new MDS Monday challenge - This week I'm super excited to be the hostess and bring you a simple card sketch. I turned the sketch into a scrap layout so I could finally scrap this sweet picture of my 5 year old little man.

I have filled the little flag punch with photos of his superhero friends, and then aligned them using the 'space evenely' feature. What a great little trick, I use this quite frequently.

Check out the tutorial from Stampin' Up! on how to do this.

Check out the challenge this week:

We would love for you to join us this week - we can't wait to see what you create with this sketch :)

Feeling the Love

This week at Colour Me...! we are using Rich Razzleberry and Pool Party - yum!

I went with a CAS card this week.

I started out by sponging around my white card base with Pool Party. Then I cut out a bunch of call outs from the Word Bubbles framelits set. I left the framelit on after I ran it through and sponge lightly with Pool Party.

I felt the background looked a bit plain at this point, so I added a little hand-doodled frame.

Recreating a favourite

This week at MDS Monday, Beth has us using up our "scraps". Seems funny to say, but it's true :)

I was recently reminded of a page that I had made a few years back. I had entered it into the Artisan Design Team competition so I no longer have it in my possession, but it was very dear to me. I decided to recreate it digitally as best I could, with a few alterations here and there.

To create the 'scraps' in the background, I added a square punch and filled it with Well Worn DSP. I kept doing a copy/paste until I had the right amount of boards. I went to each board and double-clicked on it and chose a different section of the paper. For the 'nails', I used the little button brads from Vintage Trinkets.

This was the original page, which you can read more about here.

And, here is the super fun sketch this week:

A new technique and some fun colours!

This week I'm super excited to be hosting over at The Friday Mashup. I'm a big fan of paper-piecing, and I came across this fabulous project by Mariska a little while back that got me inspired!

I used the flower from Simply Sketched and stamped it three times on Coaster Board. If you haven't tried coaster board, give it a shot! What a great product and worked so well for this technique. Because the board is so thick, it gave the flower dimension without needed to use any special adhesive. It's also subtle enough that it gives great depth without making the card too bulky.

I coloured the flower with Cherry Cobbler and Primrose Petals.

I wanted to keep the card background very simply. I started with a Soft Sky cardbase and sponged Marina Mist pulling in from the edge of the cards. It gave it a very soft, natural effect. For the fraemlit, after I ran the Coaster board through the Big Shot, I left the framelit die in place and sponged lightly around it - this gave a little hint of white around the edges where the framelit protected the cardstock from the sponging.

For the frame around the window framelit, I wanted something a little thinner than the next size framelit would have produced, so I cut a square out of Cherry Cobbler that was only 1/4" bigger than the window framelit. Then I punched out two 1-3/4" circles and cut them in half. They fit perfectly behind the window framelit, mimicking the shape and allowing for a thinner border.

Check out the challenge this week:

  1. Create a project with "Cherry Cobbler, Primrose Petals, Soft Sky & Marina Mist"
  2. Create a project using "3D Paper Piecing"
  3. Or Mash it Up and create a "3D Paper Piecing Project with the above Colors"

I can't wait to see what you create! Please come join us this week :)

CMCC#5 - Monochromatic with Purple!

It's time for a new colour challenge over at Colour Me...! We were so excited to see all the colour combinations last week, but now it's time to take it down to a 1-colour project again :)

For my card this week I started with a white background and added some Wisteria Wonder with some Gorgeous Grunge elements. I added the "Happy Day" from Happy Day and a few rhinestones.

The butterflies were punched out from the Elegant Butterfly punch in both Wisteria Wonder cardstock and Vellum. The vellum was then embossed with the Perfect Polka Dots embossing folder. Ta-da!

Check out the challenge this week:

Match-y, Match-y!

This weekend we had fun celebrating my brother's birthday with him. I wanted to make him a really special cake, so I decided to go with this Petal cake design. Nice white cake and a delicious buttercream icing.

Once the cake was done, I just had to make a card to match (naturally!). I used the 1/2" Circle Punch to punch out Bermuda Bay, Coastal Cabana and Very Vanilla. I made a border for the Chalk Talk framelit with another of the same - a quick snip in the middle and extended it out the ends slightly.

I stamped the cake image from Sketched Birthday and coloured with Blender Pens. Afterwards, I cut out a scrap cake and masked the original so that I could sponge around it with Daffodil Delight. The Happy Birthday banner is from the same set. I finished it off with a few rhinestones to mimic the bigger and smaller circles from the Freshly Made Sketches sketch I used for this card.

Check out the sketch I used from Freshly Made Sketches:

Quiet Night In

This week at MDS Monday, Heidi has a great sketch for us with the added challenge of adding "music"; music notes, lyrics, musical instruments, etc...

I had taken this photo of my husband a few months ago. We were having "Date Night In" and he was playing some music for me while I was making dinner (best kind of date night, if you ask me!). It was a great opportunity to get it scrapped.

I loved the simple sketch this week, and I wanted to keep the page simple as well. I added a small dotted overlay and some low-opacity ink splatters for a little bit of 'fullness' in the background.

Check out the sketch this week:
